I have finally removed my tag cloud from the sidebar.
It has been there for years. I used to have archive by months but then ultimately preferred the tag cloud as it is nicer to look at. It serves no useful purpose mainly because my tagging is unreliable. I used to tag to influence the ‘Related Blogs’ plugin. Now I can’t do that anymore as my host WordPress takes care of all of those plugins and the new ‘Related’ plugin doesn’t seem to allow itself to be influenced by me tweaking my tags, so I have no influence anymore.
But the tag cloud itself is glorious.
A beautiful little relic of vintage web design: words in different sizes, floating around proclaiming what I have been thinking about. Except, of course, the size of the word tells you absolutely nothing about why I wrote about it, what I meant by it, or whether I still think the same thing.
I honestly couldn’t tell you either. Well, I could tell if I have changed my mind. And, I might be able to tell you if I remember the day I wrote it. Some days I can remember exactly what the weather was doing, where I was, what I was wearing and what I ate for lunch, and what the cats were doing too. Other blogs and I can’t tell you at all.
Today though is the day that I’m retiring the tag cloud from the sidebar as it’s looking a bit cluttered. I’m not deleting it. This is an archive, after all. And also, I love looking at it but I will be overhauling the website design at some point and so I am beginning with a bit of a tidy up down the sidebar and probably the footer before I get into the serious business of making my website look a bit more up-to-date!
It has been nearly a decade since I last changed it. What is that right? I find that hard to believe. I might have to go and check. Anyway I digress. Here it is without further chitchat and marvellously it will have its own url for people to find. I may even put a clickable link back into the sidebar. So much for the tidying up!
My beautiful big tag cloud from ye olde website design days!
