What is HCI?

Human-computer interaction (HCI) is the design, evaluation, and implementation of interactive computing systems for human use and with the study of major phenomena surrounding them.

SIGCHI ACM, (1992)

What does this mean?

The study of HCI is the history, the theory, the practice, and the cognitive science of humans interacting with computers, especially unexpectedly or what I like to call the phenomena of experience.

Curriculum

This curriculum spans 10 sections, 96 lectures, and over 5 hours of material, bridging the gap between deep academic theory and practical design.

  • The Human Element: Cognitive science foundations (attention, perception, memory, embodied cognition) and mapping user context through cultural probes, user personas, stories, and flows.
  • The System & Interface: Analyzing input/output structures and where we get our data, task analysis, system architecture, desktop metaphors, information architecture, designing around the core, and designing for accuracy and transparency for the full product lifecycle.
  • The UX Laws & HCI Guidelines: Deep dives into foundational laws (Fitts’, Hick’s, Miller’s, Jakob’s, Moore’s) and primary design principles from Norman, Shneiderman, Nielsen, Dix, and Greenberg, and practical prototyping.
  • The Phenomena of Experience: Exploring how humans make meaning, the impact of trade-offs during design, the social psychology of social media, and expecting the unexpected.
  • Evaluation & Practice: Methods for expert, empirical, and user evaluation.

Current status: Legacy archive

In 2020, I launched this course as a lean, fresh introduction to the discipline on Udemy and over the years, I just couldn’t help myself, so it evolved into a comprehensive 5.5-hour domain archive, gaining 1,361 global students and counting.

The original course repository remains hosted on Udemy (check the top of the page for the latest coupons).

Please Note: The Udemy version is currently running on autopilot as a legacy archive. Automated platform features provided by Udemy—including AI assistants and automated language translations— is alas, something Udemy changes at will and without moderation.

Rebuilding for Winter 2026

The discipline of HCI is always evolving and I want this curriculum to undergo a complete structural redesign probably in Autumn 2026. After much thought – and of course some blogging about it:

My goal is to create a fresher, leaner version.
