Posted by I can’t believe it. I started Duolingo Dutch 1,047 days ago and today, I finished the whole course.
Consequently, I now have a working limited proficiency. I googled it to see what that meant and if I could do the GCSE equivalent in Dutch. Apparently, it is actually higher than a GCSE.
My research showed me that working limited proficiency is an international language measurement which is particularly useful given that the UK no longer has a GCSE in Dutch.
I learnt that last September because the new academic year makes me excitable and I imagine the smell of freshly sharpened pencils and signing up for a new course. I love learning and teaching. And, I would have loved to go to evening class and met some new people with whom I could talk Dutch. But, now I am beyond that level apparently.
Oh my goodness, what can I say? I have absolutely loved learning Dutch and tonight I’m slightly stunned and sorry it’s over.
I was just doing the wrap up of Level 60 thinking that I could get through these recap exercises learning about Belgian food and places, when the next thing I knew, it was all over and I was being awarded my working limited proficiency certificate.
Tomorrow, as I am not yet ready for my Dutch Duolingo journey to be over just yet, I might go through some of the stored Dutch learning errors whilst I have been awarded three free days of Duolingo. The paid version allows you to practice what you like. I will also use that time to have a think about the big question:
Which language would I like to learn next?

The other thing I can do is finally get the scary grammar book off my shelf and teach myself some Dutch grammar so that some of the things I haven’t quite understood during the learning journey might become clear. And, looking at Duolingo as I did wistfully all evening as I couldn’t believe I’d got to the end, it became clear that there are future sections in planning or testing right now, so I might just hang about practicing my different errors until these new sections are released.
